5 tips to find the best treasures at a flea market
Great news! Our infamous flea market is just around the corner. On December 8, from 5 PM to 8 PM, you can stroll through an array of hidden gems and treasures at the Christmas Flea Market at Student Experience Amsterdam Zuidas. Need some help finding one-of-a-kind, unique, hidden gems? Then, read this article for the very best tips. :)
Preparation
This flea market may be where you find that sweater you've dreamed of for ages. You don't want to risk seeing it being snatched away before you, right? To avoid that from happening, come prepared: arrive early, bring some cash, and carry a big tote bag with water and a snack. Ready, set, shop!
Potential
See the potential in everything! Often, things you'll find at a flea market look slightly different from what you're looking for. Don't worry! With a few adjustments, they can become wonderful purchases. Are you looking for a pair of light-wash denim? Take a look at different sizes and colors because there are many ways to alter them. YouTube and Pinterest are full of tutorials and DIYs to upcycle pieces so they can match your aesthetic.
Priority
Though flea markets are an excellent place for finding spontaneous treasures, sometimes it's good to narrow down what you're looking for and find some focus. When there’s one thing you're really looking for, focus on that first. Want to add some funky accessories to your interior? Instead of looking for a specific item, consider the color or style you're looking for and keep an eye out for that. Is your goal to find the perfect Christmas dress? Make that your priority before looking at all other things.
Price
At a flea market, items almost never have a fixed price. Sellers most likely want to get rid of their items at the end of the day, and they want to make other people happy. To score something for a bargain, always negotiate the price. When you ask the seller what the item costs, they most likely even ask a higher price than what they want for it in case people are going to haggle. Always return with a lower price. At the end you will end up in the middle where both you and the seller are happy!
Patience
Compared to shopping in a regular store, flea market shopping isn't a quick fix. You'll need to be patient and manage your expectations. Sometimes, it can take a while to find something you like, but once you've found it, you can be sure you'll have a truly unique item you'll love forever. Are you getting overwhelmed? Just chill out, say hello to your neighbors, and enjoy a nice cup of (free!) hot chocolate from the Student Experience team. After this, you're good to try again. :)
